A historic agreement between the federal government and the Snuneymuxw First Nation in British Columbia is set to return 80 hectares of land in Nanaimo to the Indigenous community. This significant decision marks the resolution of a claim dating back nearly two centuries, following a previous treaty promise unfulfilled by the government.
Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty and Snuneymuxw First Nation Chief Mike Wyse made a joint announcement confirming the return of three parcels of land that were previously under the ownership of the Defence Department. This restoration of land rights is a crucial step towards reconciliation and honoring past commitments.
In addition to the land transfer, the federal government has agreed to provide $42 million in compensation to the First Nation. This financial support will aid in the community’s efforts to realize their vision for the land, which includes plans for mixed-use developments encompassing housing, commercial spaces, community infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
The Snuneymuxw First Nation, which has historically had the lowest reserve land base per capita among B.C. First Nations, welcomes this agreement as a pivotal moment in enhancing their presence and influence in the Nanaimo region. The restored land signifies not only a return of ancestral territory but also a pathway for future growth and prosperity for the Indigenous community.
