An urgent call for help has been issued by Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter in Rexdale, North Etobicoke, as a devastating flood wreaks havoc on the vital sanctuary for survivors of violence.
Being one of Toronto’s limited emergency shelters for women, children, and gender-diverse individuals escaping abusive situations, Ernestine’s is facing a crisis due to the extensive damage caused by recent heavy rains.
Water infiltration has severely impacted the shelter’s infrastructure, with Emily McClung, the Development and Engagement Manager, revealing that the flooding has penetrated through broken areas like the deck and walls, leading to significant damages.
The situation worsened when a room had to be treated for mold, which exposed further vulnerabilities in the building’s structure. Laverne Blake, the shelter’s interim Executive Director, described how rainwater would seep through the walls during heavy downpours, exacerbating the shelter’s already compromised state.
Following an assessment, officials discovered widespread mold infestation, resulting in the closure of crucial spaces within the shelter, such as the child and youth program room, homework lab, and counseling offices. This has hindered Ernestine’s ability to provide essential trauma-informed services to its clients at the necessary standard.
The shelter now faces urgent repairs amounting to $250,000, a significant financial burden for the non-profit organization. Desperate for assistance, Ernestine’s has appealed to the public for support, as government funding remains uncertain.
Executive Director Blake emphasized the importance of community backing in fundraising efforts to swiftly address the shelter’s critical repair needs and ensure uninterrupted services for those in need.
In a bid to raise crucial funds, Ernestine’s has initiated an emergency fundraising campaign to facilitate repairs and maintain its operations. To contribute to the cause and help keep the shelter’s doors open, donations can be made through the shelter’s website.
