The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is currently conducting an inquiry following an arrest that took place in Coquitlam on Wednesday. The incident unfolded when members of the Lower Mainland District Integrated Response Team responded to a call at the Coquitlam Centre Mall parking lot just before 4 p.m. There, they apprehended a man who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
During the arrest, a police service dog was deployed to assist in subduing the man, who sustained a significant but non-life-threatening injury from a dog bite. Following the altercation, the individual was transported to a hospital for medical attention before being placed in police custody.
The IIO’s involvement is standard procedure in cases involving police-related events that lead to severe injury or fatality, regardless of any allegations of misconduct.
