“Project Muralize Revitalizes Chinatown with a Burst of Color!”

In Vancouver’s Chinatown, the streets are often marred by graffiti that defaces the shutters and walls of local businesses, creating a messy and unwelcoming environment. Ellen Lin, manager of Hang Loong Herbal Products, expresses frustration at the constant struggle to keep up with cleaning the graffiti, as vandals return quickly to undo any efforts.

Could a colorful solution be the key to combating this vandalism? Enter Project Muralize, a creative initiative spearheaded by Vancouver Police Department’s Constable Freddy Lau. Inspired by the art-adorned Chinatowns in other cities, Lau aims to transform the graffiti-ridden walls into vibrant murals that not only deter vandals but also breathe new life into Chinatown.

Constable Lau believes that vandals may show more respect towards artistic murals, leading to a decrease in defacement. By infusing the neighborhood with meaningful and culturally rich artwork, Project Muralize not only aims to deter vandalism but also to attract more visitors and foot traffic, revitalizing the area.

Renowned local artists, James Hardy ‘Smokey D’ and Jesse Gouchey, have been enlisted to create the latest mural, adding vibrant colors and culturally significant imagery to the streets. Store owner Lin hopes that these murals will bring good fortune and prosperity to the community, enhancing the overall ambiance and encouraging more business.

Funded by the Vancouver Police Foundation, Project Muralize stands as a beacon of creativity and community collaboration in the fight against vandalism and the revitalization of Vancouver’s Chinatown.
