Squamish Escalates Labor Showdown: Union Workers Facing Imminent Lockout Amid Dispute

The district government in Squamish is at odds with unionized workers, leading to a lockout impacting various facilities.

Located approximately 65 kilometers north of Vancouver, the District of Squamish has announced a lockout of certain unionized workers starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday. This move comes after a lack of response from CUPE 2269 regarding the district’s latest offer on October 4.

The lockout will impact unionized workers at Public Works, Municipal Hall, and some auxiliary offices. However, services at recreational facilities, RCMP, bylaw, emergency management, and other operations will continue unaffected.

CUPE 2269 has stated that all non-essential services provided by its members will cease at 6 a.m. in response to the district’s partial lockout, causing a district-wide disruption.

With around 250 workers represented by the union at the District of Squamish, the previous agreement between the two parties expired in December.

Since negotiations began in October 2024, the union has been engaging in limited job actions as part of the ongoing dispute.
