Travellers at Billy Bishop Airport faced disruptions on Monday due to a sudden power outage. The outage, which was pinpointed on an outage map from Hydro Toronto, occurred near the airport around 11:30 a.m. Thankfully, power was restored shortly before 2:00 p.m.
Ports Toronto, the airport’s operator, explained that the outage specifically impacted the airport’s pedestrian tunnel, caused by an issue with a Toronto Hydro feed. Consequently, the tunnel had to operate at reduced capacity during this time.
While flights within the terminal remained unaffected, ferry services were temporarily halted. The Marilyn Bell electric ferry, unable to charge due to the outage, was replaced by a fuel-based backup ferry.
As a backup measure, the airport is currently relying on a generator for power. However, due to the limited functionality, only one elevator and one escalator are operational, resulting in extensive queues reported by airport security.
This situation is continuously evolving, with further updates expected.
