With the Montreal municipal election fast approaching, the race for the city’s top position is intensifying as candidates focus on key issues such as housing, public safety, and transportation.
As voters prepare to head to the polls, CityNews spoke with residents to understand their motivations for casting their votes.
Residents like Samuel Katz express a desire for a realistic leader, stating, “Someone more like Rabouin just for realistic reasons, to not have Soraya would be my first choice.”
Others, like Michael Signer, mentioned considering Ensemble Montreal as their preferred choice, emphasizing the need for informed decision-making.
Affordability emerges as a top concern among voters, with many seeking a mayor who can address the financial pressures impacting their daily lives. “People need housing and not need to pay an arm and a leg for it,” voiced Katz.
Barry Kenzo from Côte-Des-Neiges highlighted the rising cost of living, stating, “Everyone is noticing that life can become expensive for a lot of people.”
Fritz Cleremont from Parc-Ex drew attention to homelessness, saying, “We have people living on the street and you know nothing is being done for it.”
Soraya Martinez Ferrada of Ensemble Montreal leads the polls with a steady increase in support, followed by Luc Rabouin of Projet Montreal and Gilbert Thibodeau of Action Montréal.
Political analyst Eleni Bakopanos noted a desire for change among voters, signaling a shift away from the incumbent. However, many Montrealers remain undecided as election day approaches, reflecting a lack of engagement with the current campaign.
Necki Kontslakes from Parc-Ex expressed disillusionment with the political landscape, echoing the sentiments of other residents who feel disconnected from the candidates’ proposed solutions.
The election presents a challenge for candidates to address the pressing issues facing Montrealers and engage with diverse communities, including the English-speaking population.
As advance voting commences on Sunday and election day nears on November 2, residents are encouraged to check the City of Montreal website for polling station information to participate in shaping the city’s future.
