“Public Transit Disruption Looms: STM Maintenance Workers Lock In Fresh Strike Dates”

Maintenance workers at Montreal’s public transport system, STM, have set new strike dates from October 31 to November 28. The Syndicat du transport de Montréal-CSN (CSN), representing 2,400 maintenance employees, issued the strike notice citing lack of progress in negotiations. The union emphasizes the importance of maintaining quality service for commuters and ensuring good working conditions.

Stéphanie Gratton, Vice-President of the Fédération des employées et employés de services publics-CSN (FEESP-CSN), highlighted the need for proper maintenance of metros and buses to meet public transit users’ expectations.

This upcoming strike marks the third one this year following previous strikes in June and September-October. The dispute mainly revolves around wages and subcontracting issues. Despite mediation efforts by Labor Minister Jean Boulet, a resolution has yet to be reached.

The ongoing standoff between the union and STM underscores the challenges in reaching a consensus on crucial issues affecting public transport services in Montreal.
