Québec Solidaire Power Shift: Grandmont Secures Crucial Caucus Backing in Spokesperson Race

Etienne Grandmont Leads Support for Québec Solidaire Male Spokesperson Position

Etienne Grandmont, Taschereau MNA, has garnered significant backing within the Québec solidaire (QS) caucus in the race for the male spokesperson position. As of Tuesday, Grandmont secured endorsements from four fellow members of the National Assembly: Vincent Marissal, Christine Labrie, Alexandre Leduc, and Andrés Fontecilla.

In contrast, the other contenders, Jean-Lesage MNA Sol Zanetti and Dr. Yv Bonnier Viger, are yet to receive any support from the 12-member caucus.

The need for this spokesperson race arose after Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois stepped down last March, prompting a search for his replacement. While Nadeau-Dubois remains the Gouin member for now, he will not be participating in the 2026 election.

Québec solidaire has faced challenges in recent years, with leadership transitions causing turbulence. Following Émilise Lessard-Therrien’s brief stint after Manon Massé in 2023, Ruba Ghazal assumed the female spokesperson role in 2024.

Amidst a dip in the polls, the current candidates have committed to rallying support from the left in Quebec, emphasizing their dedication to the party’s values.

Voting for the new spokesperson will take place from November 4 to 8, culminating in the announcement of Nadeau-Dubois’ successor at a party convention in Quebec City.

Prior to his political role, Grandmont was actively involved in sustainable transportation advocacy, championing public and active transit rights and advocating for environmentally conscious urban planning.

Zanetti, a staunch separatist, brings diverse experience as a former philosophy professor, union advisor, and healthcare professional. Meanwhile, Dr. Bonnier Viger, a former public health director, focuses on connecting with people across Quebec to strengthen the party.
