Quebec pool owners have been granted a two-year extension to comply with the province’s Outdoor Pool Safety Regulations, thanks to a recent decision by Minister of Municipal Affairs, Geneviève Guilbault. The new deadline of Sept. 30, 2027, provides pool owners, including those with pools predating 2010, with extra time to ensure safety measures like proper fencing to prevent child access are in place.
The extension comes as a response to public outcry over the original deadline of Sept. 30, with Guilbault first granting a one-year reprieve and now extending it by an additional year. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing pool safety and working with stakeholders to find practical solutions.
The regulations aim to enhance safety around residential pools by implementing measures such as stricter fencing requirements, mandatory automatic gates, and penalties for violations. These rules apply to all types of outdoor residential pools, including in-ground, semi-inground, above-ground, and removable pools.
While the postponement offers more time for planning and coordination with contractors, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residential pools. Pool owners are urged to continue their efforts to bring their pools up to standard in compliance with the regulations.
