“Half a Century of Impact: Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island Marks 50 Years of Changing Lives”

Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a fundraising event aimed at expanding their mentorship programs in Montreal’s West Island. The event highlighted the organization’s mission of building confidence, resilience, and supporting youth to reach their full potential.

Pascal Quimper, a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island, expressed his passion for helping the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of providing them with the necessary tools to succeed. Scott Moon, former mentor and president of the board, stressed the significance of fundraising to support the organization’s growth and to help match more children with mentors.

The organization is urging the community to step up and volunteer as mentors to address the increasing challenges faced by young individuals, including limited access to services, job opportunities, social isolation, and mental health support. Moon highlighted the prevalence of bullying and social anxiety among children in today’s digital age.

Moon shared a heartwarming story of a former mentee reconnecting after many years, now leading a happy life and crediting his mentor for crucial support during a pivotal time. Mentoring is described as a lasting friendship where mentors provide guidance and serve as positive role models.

Quimper, who recently became a mentor, spoke about his rewarding experience with Lawrence, his 9-year-old mentee, expressing his commitment to being a supportive presence in the young boy’s life.
