Education Minister Paul Calandra has taken a stand on Ontario school boards canceling prom plans. Calandra warned that if an Ontario school board fails to reinstate prom plans for three high schools, he will step in to ensure the traditional event takes place.
The decision to cancel prom at three high schools in the Durham District School Board sparked disappointment and frustration among students. The principals cited increasing liabilities and risks associated with organizing school-run proms as reasons for the cancellations.
Calandra emphasized the significance of prom as a celebration of students’ achievements and a crucial rite of passage. He urged school boards to prioritize the interests of students and teachers in their decision-making processes, emphasizing the importance of allowing students to enjoy this milestone.
Not mincing his words, Calandra emphasized, “Let kids be kids,” and stressed the importance of putting students first. He hinted at potential legislative changes that would grant him more authority to intervene in such matters to safeguard student experiences like prom.
The Durham District School Board has yet to comment on the situation. The principals of Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools assured parents that while prom may be canceled, alternative inclusive and safe year-end activities will be organized to celebrate students’ friendships and achievements.
