Broadway Faces Four-Month Closure as SkyTrain Expansion Forges Ahead

Starting in January next year, a significant segment of a busy Vancouver street will be shut down to traffic for a period of four months. This closure is necessary due to the construction work on the Broadway Subway project, as announced by the provincial government on Thursday.

During this time, construction crews will be focused on removing the traffic deck and upgrading utilities along Broadway, specifically between Main and Quebec streets.

To ensure a swift completion of the project, vehicles will be redirected around the affected block where the construction activities are ongoing. This temporary traffic detour will be in place for approximately four months. Once this phase is completed, vehicle traffic will be allowed back onto this section of Broadway, with one lane open in each direction for an additional four months while the reconstruction work wraps up.

This strategic approach aims to minimize disruptions for residents, local businesses, and commuters, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. By summer 2026, the plan is to have four lanes of traffic operational on this stretch of Broadway between Main and Quebec streets. Additionally, wider sidewalks are in the works, with the south sidewalk on Broadway set to be reconnected to Main Street, and most of the safety fencing will be removed.

Throughout the construction period, pedestrian access to all businesses, services, and residences in the area will be maintained to ensure minimal inconvenience to the community.

Stay tuned for more updates on this project as it progresses.
