“Critical Lifeline Restored: Main Route to Vancouver Island Reopens After Wildfire Ordeal”

Following months of closure due to wildfire damage, the main road leading to Bamfield, B.C., and the nearby First Nation on western Vancouver Island has finally reopened.

According to a statement released by the Transportation Ministry, the public is now able to access Bamfield Main Road. However, intermittent daytime closures will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks to allow crews to complete work along a 1.5-kilometre section of the road.

To ensure the road’s safety, several measures were taken, including the removal of hazardous trees and the repair of areas affected by the wildfire.

In addition, a new weather station has been set up to monitor wind and precipitation levels. This data will be crucial in making decisions regarding road closures during severe weather conditions.

Emergency gates have been installed at both ends of the affected road stretch for prompt closures when needed, along with clear signage for drivers.

The road closure was a consequence of the Mount Underwood fire, which resulted in evacuation orders, power outages for residents, and the eventual closure of the road in August. BC Wildfire Crews successfully brought the fire under control.
