“Mass Exodus Looms: Quebec Doctors Contemplate Departure Over New Remuneration Bill”

Concerns and Uncertainty Among Quebec Doctors Over Performance-Based Compensation Bill

Quebec doctors are facing worries and uncertainty due to Health Minister Christian Dubé’s proposed bill linking part of their pay to performance metrics. The bill is set to be rushed through the National Assembly under a gag order, prompting some doctors to consider leaving the province or hastening their retirement.

Dr. Julie Boulanger, with 26 years of experience, reveals her emotional turmoil at the thought of leaving behind patients she has cared for over the years. Dr. Boulanger’s sentiments are echoed by a 52-year-old doctor who expresses shock at the unprecedented legislation impacting their careers.

In contrast, Dr. Mathieu Larrivée remains committed to his patients in Drummondville but acknowledges the toll on his mental well-being from feeling targeted and maligned. Other doctors, like 65-year-old family physician Alain Naud, are already transitioning into retirement, citing the government’s dismissive treatment of family doctors.

The Association of General Practitioners of Quebec reports a growing sentiment among doctors considering leaving the province or retiring early. President Dr. Pascal Renaud highlights that neighboring provinces are actively recruiting Quebec doctors, with New Brunswick and Ottawa offering enticing opportunities.
