Markham Motorist Found Guilty in Drunken Crash that Claimed Life of York Police Hero

A tragic collision resulting in the death of a York Regional Police officer has led to a guilty verdict for a Markham man involved in the incident. Constable Travis Gillespie, a 38-year-old officer, lost his life in a two-vehicle crash on Major Mackenzie Drive in Markham on September 14, 2022.

The collision, which occurred around 6 a.m., involved Constable Gillespie’s white Honda Accord and a black Porsche Cayenne. Reports indicate that one of the drivers veered across the center line, leading to the fatal impact.

Tragically, Constable Gillespie succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. The other driver, identified as 23-year-old Haoju Zhou, faced charges of impaired operation causing death and dangerous operation causing death in connection with the incident.

After a legal process, Zhou was found guilty of both charges. His sentencing is scheduled for January 16, 2026, and he will remain on bail until then. York Police Chief Jim MacSween expressed condolences for Constable Gillespie’s loved ones, emphasizing the ongoing impact of his loss and the pursuit of justice following the tragedy.

Chief MacSween commended the efforts of the Peel Regional Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit for their thorough and dedicated work in uncovering the details of the collision.
