Doctors Storm National Assembly in Fiery Protest Against Controversial New Law

About fifteen doctors gathered at the Quebec National Assembly on Tuesday morning, their mouths taped shut in protest against Bill 2. This controversial law, passed hastily under a gag order from Friday to Saturday, introduces a new pay structure for doctors based partly on meeting performance targets. The doctors are particularly opposed to the severe penalties outlined in the law for any slowdown in their professional activities. Violating the law by leaving the network or reducing workload could result in hefty fines and disciplinary actions.

Nephrologist Jean-François Cailhier, who traveled from Montreal to join the demonstration, criticized the law for infringing on individual freedoms to an unprecedented degree. He described Bill 2 as an extreme form of gag order that goes too far.

Dr. Cailhier highlighted the somber atmosphere within the medical profession, expressing how many doctors feel demoralized yet continue to prioritize patient care. He criticized the Parti Québécois for supporting the law with slight modifications, questioning its compatibility with democratic principles.

Allergist-immunologist Dr. Rémi Gagnon from Quebec shared his emotional distress, noting the toll the situation has taken on doctors both professionally and personally. He described the current state as chaotic, adversely affecting their ability to provide care and morale.

Microbiologist and infectious disease specialist Dr. Anne Desjardins emphasized the strain on doctors, already working tirelessly, and criticized the law for being politically driven at the expense of healthcare professionals. She expressed concern for the future generation of doctors, fearing they may lose motivation under these conditions.

Dr. Desjardins highlighted the chilling effect of the law’s penalties, noting how fear of retribution has seeped into even their social media activity. She emphasized standing up for professional opinions despite the risks posed by the law.

The president of the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec (FMSQ), Dr. Vincent Oliva, is expected to address the media in Quebec City later in the day regarding the ongoing protests against Bill 2.
