Police Nab Duo in Cunning Laval Distraction Theft Scheme

Laval police have apprehended two individuals in connection with a recent distraction theft incident involving an elderly woman, as per an announcement made by the authorities. The arrests came shortly after a public plea for assistance last month.

The incident unfolded on October 21 when a vigilant resident in Laval notified the police of a theft in progress, leading to the swift apprehension of two suspects who were in the act of stealing jewelry from an 80-year-old woman.

Authorities have noted a surge in “distraction theft” occurrences within the city lately. The Laval police had issued a cautionary statement on September 25, advising the public to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities.

In these instances, culprits typically approach victims, often older individuals, in public places like shopping center parking lots. By engaging the victims in conversation under the guise of seeking directions or providing advice, they present a piece of jewelry as a token of appreciation.

During this interaction, the thieves exploit the closeness to discreetly pilfer the victim’s genuine jewelry items, such as bracelets, watches, necklaces, or rings, which hold significant personal and monetary value.

The two suspects, identified as Nicolai Galatan Oinescu and Isaura Alesandru, both aged 29, have a history of repeated offenses across various Canadian provinces.

They are currently facing charges of theft under $5,000 and violation of imposed conditions. Post their court hearings, the suspects were granted conditional release with specified restrictions while awaiting further legal proceedings scheduled for December at Laval municipal court.

Authorities suspect that there might be additional victims and urge anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Laval police.

The public, particularly seniors, are advised to stay cautious and observe fundamental safety precautions:

For individuals who suspect being targeted or possess information regarding the suspects, it is urged to get in touch with the Laval police information line at 450-662-INFO (4636) or contact 911, mentioning case number LVL251021-038.
