Soraya Martinez Ferrada, a mayoral candidate and leader of Ensemble Montréal, unveiled her party’s strategy to enhance public safety in the upcoming municipal election. Dubbed ’10 Actions in 100 Days: Boosting Safety in Every Community,’ the initiative aims to establish watch committees in conjunction with the SPVM within the first 100 days of taking office.
Ensemble Montréal expressed concerns over residents avoiding certain parks, public areas, and metro stations during specific hours due to escalating insecurity and criminal incidents. To address this issue, Neighbourhood Watch Committees will be established, consisting of community groups, residents, and civil society members.
These committees will act as forums for communication and cooperation, enabling the identification of safety issues and the proposal of targeted solutions in neighborhoods most impacted by insecurity.
Martinez Ferrada emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of Montrealers and their families, acknowledging the unease felt by many in public spaces. Highlighting the necessity for immediate action, she pledged to implement changes starting on November 2.
Ensemble Montréal’s efforts to enhance public safety will not solely rely on increased police presence but will also focus on building trust and collaboration. Gabriel Retta, the party’s spokesperson for public safety and a city council candidate in Saint-Léonard Ouest, emphasized the significance of community engagement in restoring peace of mind to neighborhoods.
Moreover, Ensemble Montréal intends to address safety concerns around Montreal’s highways by securing surrounding areas, intersections, and underpasses in partnership with the Quebec Government. The party also plans to enhance safety at the city’s most hazardous pedestrian crossings and expand the number of school crossing guards.
