Exo, a key player in Quebec’s commuter train network, has kicked off the deployment of their new fleet of cutting-edge low-emission locomotives, a move that signals a significant leap towards a more modern and eco-friendly transportation system.
These state-of-the-art locomotives, manufactured by Siemens Mobility, are set to replace the aging F59PH models that have faithfully served for over 35 years. With the ability to accommodate 10 cars instead of the previous eight, the new locomotives offer increased capacity and flexibility, all while adhering to stringent emission regulations.
Quebec’s Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Jonatan Julien, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation solutions that benefit both the environment and commuters.
Exo’s dedication to enhancing reliability, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability is evident in this rollout. The delivery of four locomotives is already underway, with the full set expected to be operational by October 2026, following thorough testing procedures.
According to Marc Rousseau, Exo’s executive director, the integration of these new locomotives into the network signifies a significant milestone in the modernization efforts of Exo’s train fleet. This move underscores Exo’s mission to promote sustainable mobility and elevate the overall service quality for its passengers, all while striving for superior environmental performance.
Initially, the new locomotives will serve the Saint-Jérôme line, covering regions such as the North Shore, Laval, and parts of northern Montreal. The project is receiving partial funding from the Government of Quebec through its Assistance Program for Public Transit for People.
