Canadian border officers made a significant discovery during cargo screening at a Toronto facility. The officers detected a suspicious substance in a shipment from India, which was identified as opium, a key ingredient in heroin production.
More than four kilograms of the illicit substance were found in the package, prompting the officers to involve the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for further investigation.
On October 24, 2025, a search warrant was executed at the intended delivery address of the shipment. Subsequently, 33-year-old Sunil Kumar from Ottawa was arrested and charged with importing and trafficking a Schedule 1 substance.
Kumar has been released from custody and is set to appear in an Ottawa court on December 2, 2025. Further details on the case are pending investigation.
