“STM Showdown: Bus Drivers and Metro Operators Set Strike Date for Mid-November”

Bus operators and metro drivers are considering a strike on November 15 and 16 unless there is progress in negotiations.

Frédéric Therrien, president of Local 1983 of CUPE, addressed the media in front of the Palais des congrès de Montréal, emphasizing the necessity of finding a solution that may come with a cost.

While acknowledging that the strike may not have universal support, Therrien highlighted that the action aims to safeguard the quality of public transportation services, crucial for the community.

Despite the inconvenience to the public, Therrien stressed that various tactics have been employed to minimize disruptions, emphasizing the collective fight for both fair wages and improved public transit in Montreal.

He attributed the challenges to the underfunding of public transit by the City of Montreal and the Quebec government, critiquing the current state of affairs.

CUPE’s gathering of around 3,000 demonstrators outside the Palais des congrès coincided with the Canadian Urban Transit Association’s event.
