After a labor strike by STM bus drivers and metro operators, normal services have resumed in Montreal. However, the transit woes continue as maintenance workers remain on strike, leading to restricted operations during rush hours and late nights. Montrealers are facing inconvenience and longer commutes due to limited service availability.
One Montreal resident shared, “We have to adjust our schedules to catch the limited service, which means waiting longer and disrupting our routines.” Another expressed frustration from a previous strike, recalling a lengthy bike ride home due to the lack of public transportation.
There is a glimmer of hope as the union representing bus drivers and metro operators, CUPE, expressed openness to mediation with STM management. Both parties aim to reach a resolution to avoid further disruptions. However, if crucial demands like fair wages and improved working conditions are not met, a second strike is scheduled for mid-November.
Amidst these negotiations, the CSN union, representing STM maintenance workers, is also engaged in talks. If an agreement is not reached soon, Montrealers may face prolonged service limitations and additional shutdowns in the near future.
