A violent altercation near the Place-Saint-Henri metro station has resulted in the 29th homicide on the Island of Montreal since the start of 2025.
Tragically, a 42-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital after the incident, as confirmed by Johany Charland, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), on Sunday morning.
Authorities were alerted to the altercation around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday through a 911 call reporting a conflict between two individuals near the intersection of Charlebois and Saint-Philippe streets, in close proximity to the Place-Saint-Henri metro station in the Le-Sud-Ouest borough.
Upon reaching the scene, police found the victim, a 42-year-old man, in a wooded area between the metro station and the railroad tracks with a severe upper-body injury caused by a sharp object. Though conscious upon their arrival, the man’s condition quickly deteriorated.
Unable to regain consciousness, the man was rushed to the hospital where he tragically lost his life to his injuries.
The suspect managed to flee the scene before law enforcement arrived, prompting the establishment of a significant security perimeter in the vicinity.
Officer Charland emphasized the active nature of the crime scene around 8:45 a.m., stating that the major crimes unit would spearhead the investigation to unravel the motives and circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigative team had already set up a mobile command post on-site to kickstart their inquiries.
Throughout the day, multiple witnesses were scheduled for interviews by the police, and investigators planned to scour the area for surveillance footage that could provide crucial leads.
The SPVM’s investigation remains ongoing.
