Poll Reveals: Overwhelming Call for Ontario Labour Minister Piccini’s Resignation Amidst Funding Scandal

A recent survey by Abacus Data indicates that a majority of Ontarians are calling for the resignation or removal of Labour Minister David Piccini from Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet. The poll, released Monday and conducted by CUPE Ontario, reveals that 52% of respondents feel Piccini should step down or be fired due to allegations of mismanagement of the government’s Skills Development Fund.

The controversy arose following claims that Piccini allocated $126 million from the fund to companies employing registered lobbyists, despite their projects being deemed low to medium priority. This issue gained traction after a critical report from the Auditor General on October 1, highlighting concerns about the minister’s selection process, lack of transparency, and potential favoritism.

The Auditor General noted inconsistencies in funding allocation and the absence of clear criteria for decision-making, raising questions about fairness and accountability. While no legal violations were found, the situation has sparked public outcry and political pressure.

Despite denying any misconduct and evading questions about lobbyist influence, Piccini faces calls for accountability from various quarters. Opposition parties are urging Premier Ford to seek Piccini’s resignation, with even a significant portion of Progressive Conservative Party supporters expressing dissatisfaction with Piccini’s handling of the fund.

The Abacus Data poll, conducted online with 2,000 Ontario residents from October 24 to 29, 2025, underlines growing concerns about government transparency and accountability. CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn criticized Piccini for allegedly using the Skills Development Fund as a “slush fund” to benefit political allies.

Over 40% of respondents see this scandal as indicative of broader issues with how the Ford government awards contracts and grants. As demands for answers escalate, both Ford and Piccini have yet to issue statements on the matter.
