Projet Montréal Leader Steps Down After Mayoral Defeat
Luc Rabouin, the leader of Projet Montréal, has officially announced his decision to step down after losing the mayoral race to Soraya Martinez Ferrada of Ensemble Montréal. This defeat marks the end of his party’s eight-year governance at City Hall.
In his concession speech on election night, Rabouin, who garnered 35% of the vote, took full responsibility for the loss, stating, “I gave it everything I had, but it wasn’t enough.”
Throughout his campaign, Rabouin emphasized his experience and proposed solutions, pledging to address homelessness, enhance social housing, support tramway projects, streamline construction planning, and promote a more climate-resilient city.
Despite his efforts, Rabouin faced challenges in distancing himself from the legacy of the previous mayor, Valérie Plante, under whose leadership Projet Montréal had seen success. Analysts noted that voters were seeking change and that Rabouin’s association with the party’s past hindered his ability to convey a fresh vision.
The defeat extended beyond the mayoral race, with other key figures within Projet Montréal, such as Gracia Kasoki Katahwa and Robert Beaudry, facing losses in their respective races.
As the city awaits the official report on the vote count, questions loom about the future of Projet Montréal and who will step up to lead the party forward after this significant setback.
