Transition Montréal, a new progressive political party, made its debut in Montreal’s municipal election with mayoral candidate Craig Sauvé leading the charge. The party secured a solid fourth place finish, capturing 8.5% of the votes by 11 p.m., despite ongoing vote counting.
Sauvé, a seasoned city councillor, expressed pride in the impact Transition Montréal had on the election, emphasizing their bold stance on key issues. The party’s platform prioritized enhancing affordable housing, public transportation, bike lanes, public safety, nightlife, and access to affordable food.
One of their notable proposals was a plan to increase taxes on single-family homes valued over $3.5 million, with the aim of funding community organizations, social housing, and homelessness initiatives. Additionally, Transition Montréal advocated for electoral reforms, including implementing preferential voting for the election of the Montreal mayor and borough mayors.
Fielding candidates across all 19 boroughs of Montreal, Transition Montréal aimed to bring a fresh perspective to local governance. While Sauvé fell behind Project Montréal and Ensemble Montréal candidates in his city council race, he remained optimistic about the future of the party.
Looking ahead, Sauvé affirmed Transition Montréal’s commitment to its grassroots movement and vowed to continue pushing forward with their vision for a better Montreal.
