Day 4 of STM Strike Paralyzes Montreal: Commuters Grapple with Widespread Transit Chaos

Montreal’s Transit System Faces Disruptions Due to Strikes and Reduced Schedules

Montreal’s transit system is experiencing disruptions with both metro and bus services operating on reduced schedules, especially during off-peak hours. The union representing 4,500 bus drivers and metro operators (CUPE 1983) went on strike on Nov. 1, leading to a complete shutdown of the STM network for 24 hours. This marked the first strike by this union in nearly four decades. There is a possibility of another strike occurring on Nov. 15 and 16 if a resolution is not reached beforehand.

Bus services to schools are also affected, with trips to some schools being canceled. Transit riders are advised to visit the STM website’s school service page to check which schools are impacted.

Furthermore, the STM’s paratransit service is facing disruptions as unionized maintenance workers are on strike until Nov. 28. These workers are seeking wage increases and an end to subcontracting by the public transit agency. This strike is the third and the most extensive by the maintenance workers.

To stay informed about the latest updates and real-time schedules, transit users are encouraged to monitor the STM website for the most current information.
