Former Hydro-Québec Scientist Testifies in Espionage Trial: Accused of Spying for China

Yuesheng Wang, a former Hydro-Québec researcher, is currently standing trial for allegedly sharing confidential research with Chinese entities to advance battery technologies. Wang defends his actions by claiming the shared information is publicly available and stems from his extensive academic background in sodium-ion batteries research prior to his relocation to Quebec. The 38-year-old has pleaded not guilty to charges of economic espionage under Canada’s Security of Information Act, as well as four other charges brought in 2022 and 2024 under the Criminal Code. Wang is providing his testimony before Quebec court Judge Jean-Philippe Marcoux at the Longueuil courthouse following the conclusion of the Crown’s case on Monday.
