Sandy Brondello Takes the Helm: Toronto Tempo Names First-Ever Head Coach for Historic WNBA Debut

Sandy Brondello, a seasoned basketball coach with a successful track record, has been appointed as the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo in the WNBA, as officially announced by the team on Tuesday.

Hailing from Australia, Brondello previously led the New York Liberty to victory in the 2024 WNBA championship. Despite this achievement, her contract was not renewed after the team’s early exit in last season’s playoffs. Her impressive coaching record with New York includes a notable 107-53 win-loss record over four seasons, setting a new franchise milestone.

In addition to her success with the Liberty, Brondello also steered the Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA title in 2014 during her eight-year tenure with the team.

At 56 years old, Brondello now embarks on a new challenge with the Toronto Tempo, an expansion team scheduled to make its debut in the 2026 season. Toronto’s entry into the league marks a significant milestone as the first WNBA franchise located outside the United States.
