Toronto police are currently reviewing a concerning incident captured on video involving the accidental running over of a suspect by a police cruiser during an arrest. The incident occurred at the Jane Park Plaza parking lot on November 1, following reports of a woman with knives at the scene.
Initial reports from Toronto police indicated that the suspect was damaging police vehicles with the knives, prompting warnings to the public to avoid the area. However, it was only after the emergence of video footage that the full extent of the dramatic arrest came to light.
The video, shared on social media platforms, depicts the woman being subdued by officers in the parking lot. As one officer deploys a conducted energy weapon, the woman falls in front of a police cruiser. Subsequently, the cruiser, which was not properly secured, moves forward towards the woman and other officers, resulting in a collision.
Despite the shocking nature of the incident, Toronto Police confirmed that no serious injuries were sustained by anyone involved. Paramedics assessed both the suspect and the officer, and they were cleared medically. The suspect was taken to the hospital for further evaluation related to the conducted energy weapon deployment.
Amidst the circulation of the videos online, concerns were raised by Toronto attorney David Shellnutt regarding the handling of the arrest and adherence to proper procedures by the police. The incident has sparked discussions about the training of officers in dealing with high-stress situations and individuals in distress.
