A man from Mississauga, Canada, has admitted to attacking two correctional officers at a U.S. prison in 2020 while serving time for planning a terrorist act in New York City.
Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, aged 27, was incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary Allenwood in Pennsylvania when he assaulted two officers using a makeshift weapon crafted from a steel desk part in his cell on Dec. 7, 2020. His violent act resulted in serious injuries, with one officer losing an eye.
A note found in El Bahnasawy’s possession declared the assault as a terrorist act for the Islamic State, with additional evidence of allegiance to ISIS discovered in his cell.
El Bahnasawy has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault, possession of contraband, and supporting ISIS. Prior to the prison incident, he was already serving time for his involvement in planning a mass attack in New York City in 2016.
