Courtesy on Quebec roads is in decline: Survey

Experts are warning that courtesy on Quebec roads is in decline, with impatience and risky driving becoming more common.

A recent survey by the Quebec automobile insurance board, SAAQ, found that 92 per cent of Quebecers say failing to follow the Highway Safety Code is an urgent problem.

Drivers reported being especially irritated by being cut off, tailgated, or encountering vehicles that don’t signal.

Road safety experts say these daily micro-aggressions can escalate, leading to honking, sudden braking and sometimes accidents.

Many point to a lack of knowledge of basic rules of the road as a key factor.

Some specialists are calling for regular refresher courses or testing when renewing a driver’s licence, possibly even with small incentives.

Currently the SAAQ has no current plans for mandatory re-training.
