Motorists across Quebec are being urged to drive with caution on Monday as a mix of rain, snow and sleet sweeps through much of the province.
In Montreal, the snow that blanketed the city on Sunday turned to rain overnight, but Environment Canada expects snow to return later in the day, with several centimetres of accumulation by Tuesday.
The first snowfall of the season led to multiple road accidents and power outages on Sunday. Early Monday, nearly 10,000 Hydro-Québec customers were still without electricity, mainly in Montérégie, the Laurentians and Chaudière-Appalaches regions.
The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec is reminding drivers to exercise caution, noting that many have yet to install their winter tires — mandatory as of Dec. 1.
Periods of rain will change to light snow Monday morning, with fog patches dissipating and a high near 1°C. By tonight, snow will continue with 2 to 4 centimetres expected, as southwest winds strengthen to 30 km/h gusting to 50. Temperatures will drop to –2°C, feeling closer to –9 with the wind chill.
Flurries will persist through Tuesday, with temperatures holding steady around –2°C. Periods of snow are expected to continue overnight with a low near –1°C. On Wednesday, precipitation may shift between snow and rain, with a daytime high of 3°C and cloudy skies lingering into the night.
By Thursday, conditions are expected to remain cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a high of 4°C, before clearing overnight with temperatures dipping to around 0°C. Sunshine will return on Friday, bringing a bright but cool day with a high of 2°C and a clear, chilly night dropping to –5°C.
