Fundraiser support grows after tragic death of 8-year-old girl who fell from Yaletown high-rise

There is more information about the 8-year-old girl, who tragically lost her life after falling from a high-rise balcony in Yaletown earlier in November.

Officers were called to the building near Nelson Street and Expo Boulevard just after 2:30 p.m. on November 11.

First responders tried to save the girl’s life, but she had to succumb to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says that the girl was visiting her dad at the time.

“Through our investigation, we have gained a better understanding of the circumstances that led up to the tragedy, but are not able to share those details publicly,” the VPD said in a written statement.

By working with the girl’s mother, Jeff Stollery became a friend of the mother and daughter.

“I had the pleasure of getting to know her, and she made me this bracelet, and she just lit up a room. I know you hear these things, but she was just so kind and happy,” he told CityNews.

“She was very happy and very joyful and just now, an absolute pleasure to be around,” Stollery said, who is the owner and CEO of Willow Brea Academy in Squamish.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to help support the girl’s mother, who is in her eighth month of pregnancy. The fundraiser is run by Suki Sandhu, a close friend of the mother.

“I can not handle it personally. She’s such a beautiful little girl. I still can not put the past tense to her name,” said Sandhu.

“She was very, very close to us. And Masa, she’s a wonderful mother. She was doing everything for [her daughter], always there and telling me stories, we would pick up a call.”

The girl’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 19. The burial service will be open to the public and take place at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Garibaldi Cemetery.
