Professors at ÉTS issue five-day strike mandate

Professors at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal have just given themselves a mandate for a five-day strike, to be exercised at the appropriate time.

This independent union, the Association of Professors of the École de technologie supérieure (APÉTS), represents 233 professors who work at this engineering school. Lecturers are not members of this union.

The association announced that 97.7 per cent of members voted in favour of this strike mandate.

The union indicated on Monday that the five days of strike action could be used separately or in blocks of days, depending on the strategy that will be chosen when the time comes.

The collective agreement expired on June 1st.

Among its demands, the union notes the need for “conditions comparable to those of other major engineering schools in Quebec,” as well as the addition of support staff to assist professors in their duties.

When contacted by email, the management of the École de technologie supérieure indicated that it “has always intended to offer competitive conditions and a stimulating work environment.”

“That’s why, beyond base salaries, we have created a comprehensive compensation system that includes bonuses and research funding,” added Jean-Alexandre D’Etcheverry, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations at ÉTS.

He stated that management remains confident that an agreement can be reached “to the satisfaction of all parties”.
