Montreal Police investigating fire in Plateau Mont-Royal as arson

Montreal Police (SPVM) are investigating a fire in Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal borough as arson.

SPVM says they responded to 911 calls reporting a commercial alarm around 5:10 a.m. on Thursday at Saint-Laurent Blvd. near Milton St. When police arrived, the firefighters were already on the scene and busy extinguishing a minor fire inside the business, police say.

There were no injuries. However, there were minor damages to the building.

“According to the initial information obtained by police at the scene, one of the commercial windows had been smashed and incendiary material had been located by firefighters, suggesting that the fire was from a criminal nature,” said Johany Charland, spokesperson for SPVM.

A perimeter has been established, and the SPVM Arson unit will take charge of the investigation and visit the scene to try to understand the causes and circumstances of this event, SPVM said.

No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is still ongoing.
