Arbitrator Orders Reinstatement of Langara Instructor Dismissed After Pro-Palestinian Rally Remarks

A professor at Langara College who was fired following her participation in a pro-Palestinian rally has been reinstated after nearly two years due to an arbitrator’s decision.

Dr. Natalie Knight, who faced dismissal for alleged controversial remarks made during a student-organized rally supporting her, has now been given the opportunity to return to her position. The Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC (FPSE) emphasized that politics played a significant role in her termination.

Arbitrator Randy Noonan ruled in favor of Knight, stating that her firing violated various rights and agreements, including the Human Rights Code and Academic Freedom principles. The FPSE hailed this decision as a crucial victory against what they deemed an unjust dismissal influenced by ministerial interference.

The organization accused former Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, Selina Robinson, of using her position to advocate for Knight’s termination. Despite the college denying any influence, FPSE insists the decision was prompted by Robinson’s public call for Knight to be fired.

In response to mounting pressure, Robinson resigned from her ministerial post, following controversial comments made about Palestine at a panel discussion. Knight expressed gratitude for the support received during her ordeal, highlighting the importance of union solidarity in protecting workers from unfair treatment.
