The Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) finds itself embroiled in a new controversy as leader Pablo Rodriguez vows to take action against allegations of a cash-for-vote scheme during the party’s leadership race. Following the publication of incriminating text messages by the Journal de Montréal, Rodriguez demanded transparency and accountability from the publication.
During a press conference after an emergency caucus meeting in Montreal, Rodriguez emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of such claims before they are publicized. He urged for the identities of those involved in the messages and the verification process undertaken by the Journal de Montréal to be disclosed to prevent unwarranted damage to reputations and careers.
Cogeco alleged that Liberal MNA Sona Lakhoyan Olivier and CAQ MNA Alice Abou-Khalil were behind the messages, a claim vehemently denied by both MNAs. Rodriguez announced that formal notices would be sent to Cogeco by Olivier and Abou-Khalil, while the PLQ has initiated an external investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, another crisis unfolded as Liberal MNA Marwah Rizqy dismissed her chief of staff, Geneviève Hinse, triggering a legal battle. Hinse, who is seeking damages for what she deems an unjustifiable termination, faced accusations of ethical breaches. The situation has created internal discord within the party, raising questions about leadership and transparency.
As the controversies escalate, Rodriguez faces challenges in managing the party’s image and unity. The unfolding events have cast a shadow over the PLQ’s credibility and effectiveness as the official opposition, prompting concerns among party members about the impact on their political agenda.
