Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles is making waves by openly criticizing the provincial government, leading to her expulsion from the legislature this week.
During a heated Question Period on Wednesday, Stiles did not mince words when she accused Doug Ford’s government of being “anti-democratic” and “corrupt” while pressing Labour Minister David Piccini on his oversight of the scandal-ridden Skills Development Fund.
Speaker Donna Skelly intervened, cautioning Stiles that her language was inappropriate for the parliamentary setting and requested her to retract the statement. However, Stiles stood her ground and was subsequently removed from the legislature.
In a recent interview with Breakfast Television, Stiles defended her remarks, emphasizing her commitment to holding the government accountable.
“I take this responsibility seriously. Getting ejected from the legislature means I lose the opportunity to participate in crucial votes, but as the opposition leader, I must ask the tough questions on behalf of the public and ensure transparency,” Stiles asserted.
Stiles highlighted concerns over the alleged connections between the Skills Development Fund and companies benefiting from grants, accusing the situation of being corrupt.
Referencing a scathing report from Ontario’s independent Auditor General, which revealed potential preferential treatment in the selection of funding applicants, Stiles underscored the lack of fairness and transparency in the process.
While the Auditor General found no legal violations, she pointed out inconsistencies in how funding recipients were chosen, raising questions about fairness and accountability.
The Ontario Liberals and the Green Party have echoed the NDP’s calls for Minister Piccini to step down, labeling the situation a “pay-to-play” arrangement.
Despite mounting pressure, Piccini has maintained his innocence, backed by Premier Doug Ford’s support in retaining his position.
