Family Fears Escalate as Strike Paralyzes GTA Care Home Operations

Concerns arise among families of individuals residing in a Toronto group home as support workers go on strike. The management’s responses have left loved ones feeling uneasy about the quality of care their family members will receive during the strike.

Support staff at Central West Specialized Development Services, a community supporting adults with developmental disabilities, went on strike after a request for a no-board report from management over 40 days ago.

In the absence of regular support workers, third-party agency staff have stepped in to care for the residents during the strike.

Relatives like Rabia Khedr, whose brother resides in the facility, express frustration over the lack of communication and uncertainty regarding the care their family members will receive. Khedr highlights the management’s decision to move residents without family consent, adding to the distress.

CWSDS CEO Patricia Kyle reassures that the safety and well-being of residents are the top priorities during the strike.
