Ontario’s New Justice Bill to Mandate Upfront Cash for Bail: What You Need to Know

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government plans to introduce a new law requiring individuals accused of crimes and granted bail to provide a cash security deposit upfront. This change aims to enhance bail compliance and address issues in the current system that allow violent and repeat offenders to be released back into the community, potentially endangering innocent individuals.

Attorney General Doug Downey emphasized the importance of holding accused individuals accountable by implementing measures that make bail more real and consequential for serious crime suspects. The current system allows for payment after a breach of bail conditions, but the proposed legislation would require the deposit to be paid upon release, with a refund upon case conclusion.

In addition to the legislative changes, Downey and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner revealed other initiatives to bolster the bail system, such as the use of improved digital tools for tracking repeat offenders and expanding bail prosecution teams. These actions are aimed at safeguarding communities from violent and repeat offenders, according to Kerzner.

During a press conference, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw highlighted the importance of these measures, especially with the increasing involvement of young individuals in gun-related crimes. Demkiw stressed the need to remain vigilant in addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of the public.
