Ontario to Introduce Andrew’s Law to Strengthen Dangerous Driving Penalties
Ontario is gearing up to introduce a new legislation, known as Andrew’s Law, aimed at bolstering penalties for dangerous driving offences. This law is a tribute to the late Andrew Cristillo, a father of three who tragically lost his life in August due to a collision with an alleged dangerous driver.
Under Andrew’s Law, individuals convicted of dangerous driving causing death will face lifetime driving bans. Additionally, police will have the authority to immediately suspend a driver’s licence for 90 days if there are suspicions of dangerous driving, along with the imposition of heightened fines.
The inspiration behind this initiative comes from Jordan Cristillo, Andrew’s brother, who started a petition to prevent other families from enduring the same heart-wrenching loss they experienced. The spark for this campaign was ignited after the 18-year-old driver involved in Andrew’s fatal accident was also connected to a previous incident where a vehicle collided with an Ontario Provincial Police car transporting Premier Doug Ford in January.
Following a meeting with Cristillo’s family during the summer, Premier Doug Ford pledged to champion legislation in response to their petition, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety measures.
