Discussions Begin on Quebec’s Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets
Starting on Tuesday, consultations are underway at the National Assembly to review Quebec’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals. Since committing to the Paris Agreement in 2015, Quebec has aimed to lower its emissions by 37.5% below 1990 levels by 2030.
Environment Minister Bernard Drainville highlighted the significant challenge ahead, noting that Quebec has achieved a 19% reduction since 1990, leaving the remaining 18% to be achieved in the next five years. Stressing the importance of balancing climate concerns with economic stability, Drainville acknowledged the global influence on climate commitments following shifts like the administration change in the United States.
Emphasizing the need for an ambitious yet realistic target, Drainville underscored the importance of selecting a goal that aligns with both environmental ambitions and economic realities. According to the Act, Quebec must revise its GHG reduction target by December 31, 2025, prompting the current consultations led by the Transport and Environment Commission.
Alain Webster, the head of the Advisory Committee on Climate Change, is set to address the assembly, advocating for a steadfast commitment to climate action regardless of geopolitical circumstances. The committee recently proposed 11 recommendations to urge Quebec to raise its emission reduction targets.
