“Breakthrough in Bill 2 Crisis: Legault Touts ‘Very Positive’ Talks With Quebec Doctors’ Federation”

Premier Legault Meets with Quebec Family Doctors’ Federation President Amid Legal Challenge

Quebec Premier François Legault recently had a “very positive” meeting with the president of the Quebec family doctors’ federation, despite the group’s ongoing legal challenge against the province.

The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) filed an appeal for judicial review last week, seeking to suspend Bill 2, a law that ties physicians’ salaries to patient numbers and vulnerability levels.

Since the implementation of Bill 2 a month ago, the FMOQ claims it has caused catastrophic consequences, leading some doctors to leave Quebec, retire early, or transition to the private sector. In fact, a family doctor clinic in Montreal’s Quartier Latin neighborhood announced its closure due to financial challenges linked to the law.

During the meeting, the FMOQ and Premier Legault discussed potential solutions to address the ongoing crisis. The federation emphasized the urgent need for action to stabilize the situation as doctors depart and patients face difficulties accessing essential care.

Premier Legault highlighted the importance of providing Quebecers with access to family doctors, stressing the necessity of collaboration to achieve this goal.

Various medical federations and associations in Quebec, including those representing specialists, residents, and pharmacy owners, have also initiated legal challenges against Bill 2.
