“Shattered Dreams: Migrant Family Faces Uncertain Future as Quebec Cancels PEQ Program”

Ala Jarallah and his family left Tunisia for Quebec as tourists in 2023, hopeful for a fresh start. Seeking assistance from an immigration consultant, their journey took an unexpected turn when they were misled into a job that exposed Ala to dangerous work.

Reflecting on their ordeal, Jarallah expressed, “We were seeking assistance to transition to a legal status, but found ourselves navigating through challenging and lengthy paths.”

Tragically, while on this job, Ala experienced a severe workplace accident resulting in the loss of part of his finger. To make ends meet, his wife took on dual jobs for two strenuous years to support their family.

Their hopes for stability were pinned on obtaining permanent residency through Quebec’s PEQ program, known for its swift immigration process. However, with the sudden cancellation of the program by the province, the family faces an uncertain future, leaving them feeling devastated.

Jarallah emphasizes the human aspect behind each immigration case, urging the government to recognize the dedication and effort individuals like him were prepared to contribute to Quebec.

Expressing their current plight, Jarallah lamented, “The government’s decision has shattered us completely, leaving us feeling utterly broken.”
