Women and girls are coming together to empower themselves through a self-defense seminar organized by Heka Innergy and Auto-Défense Krav Maga Vaudreuil, located west of Montreal. The seminar aims to provide practical safety tools, skills, and confidence-building exercises to participants.
Melissa Degongre, the founder of Heka Innergy, shared her personal journey of overcoming a difficult relationship by turning to Krav Maga for empowerment. She emphasized the importance of sharing her learnings with others to show that they have the strength to prevent similar situations.
Instructor Harry Stergiopoulos highlighted the goal of neutralizing attackers through a combination of defense techniques and counterattacks. He mentioned that many women attending the seminar have unfortunately come from situations of domestic abuse, reflecting the concerning rise in such cases in Quebec.
The Empower Her Seminar, scheduled for November 29th, not only teaches self-defense against violence but also supports women from local shelters to participate safely and anonymously. This inclusive approach ensures that all participants feel comfortable and empowered during the seminar.
As the seminar approaches, participants are encouraged to view Krav Maga as a combat system focused on practical self-defense rather than a sport with rules. The event is made possible with sponsorship from Centric Brands and additional support from various local businesses.
The initiative aligns with the ongoing 12 days of action against violence towards women leading up to the anniversary of the 1989 Polytechnique massacre on December 6th. By providing women and girls with the tools and confidence to defend themselves, the seminar aims to create a community of empowered individuals capable of standing up against violence.
