Verdun to Ramp Up Beach Safety After Drowning Tragedy Spurs Coroner’s Urgent Recommendations

In response to recent tragic drownings, Montreal’s Verdun borough is taking steps to enhance safety measures at the Verdun beach. Last summer, a 27-year-old man lost his life while swimming in an unauthorized area of the St-Lawrence River, with cannabis use identified as a contributing factor.

The coroner’s report highlighted the dangers of cannabis consumption in relation to water activities, emphasizing the need for caution. The man’s body was discovered on the evening of June 23, following a drowning incident caused by strong currents.

Sadly, this was not an isolated incident, as there were three drownings at Verdun beach last summer. Another case involved a 20-year-old man on June 7, where inadequate signage led to confusion about the beach’s status.

To prevent such tragedies in the future, the Verdun borough has undertaken significant safety improvements. These include enhanced signage, barriers to restricted areas, and heightened security measures at the beach. Additionally, plans are in motion for an awareness campaign in 2026 and an independent review of the signage to further bolster safety protocols.
