“VPD Launches Urgent Community Forum in Response to Surging Extortion Wave in Metro Vancouver”

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is organizing a public event to raise awareness about extortion crimes in the Lower Mainland. The Anti-Extortion Community Forum aims to educate residents on recognizing extortion, understanding warning signs, and taking necessary steps if targeted.

Although no extortion incidents have been reported in Vancouver directly, neighboring communities have experienced a rise in crime causing concern among Vancouverites.

Sgt. Steve Addison emphasized the importance of breaking the cycle of fear by shedding light on these crimes and encouraging open discussions within the community.

Most extortion cases have surfaced in Surrey, with over 100 investigations by the Surrey Police Service, a significant number linked to shootings and targeting the South Asian business community.

Former B.C. public safety minister and VPD superintendent Kash Heed commended Vancouver’s proactive approach in addressing potential threats and fostering communication to prevent escalation.

The community forum, scheduled at the South Hall Banquet and Wedding Palace on Ross Street at 7 p.m., presents a valuable opportunity for residents to stay informed and engaged.
