The deadline for transitioning to winter-ready tires in Quebec is quickly approaching, with Dec. 1 marking the official switch.
As the winter season arrived early this year, many residents of Montreal rushed to ensure their vehicles were equipped with the necessary winter tires. Starting from Dec. 1, individuals must adhere to the province’s Highway Safety Code, which mandates the use of winter tires on all vehicles registered in Quebec from Dec. 1 to March 15.
Failure to comply with this requirement can result in fines ranging from $200 to $300. The Quebec government advises motorists to consider delaying the switch to all-season or summer tires until a few weeks after the mandated period ends due to potential variable spring conditions.
To be deemed compliant, winter tires must bear the appropriate marking or be studded. This regulation encompasses all motor vehicles registered in the province, with the exception of trailers, heavy vehicles, and farm machinery. However, an exemption of up to seven days can be obtained through an application on the website of the auto-insurance board (SAAQ).
